SMS templates allow you to standardize short messages used in automations, notifications, and booking flows. This article explains how to edit SMS content, insert placeholders, and test templates before enabling them in live workflows.

1. Accessing SMS templates

You can edit SMS templates in any campaign that uses SMS messaging.

To access templates:

  1. Open the campaign

  2. Go to Campaign settings

  3. Select SMS

  4. Choose an existing template or create a new one

SMS templates can also be accessed when editing automations or action listeners, but the recommended approach is through the dedicated template editor.

2. Using placeholders in SMS messages

SMS templates support all standard Hubhus placeholders, including:

  • Lead fields

  • Select-field slugs and values

  • Assigned person and brand placeholders

  • Event placeholders (if triggered from an event)

  • Custom fields

  • Date and time placeholders

To find available placeholders:

  • Press CTRL+K (Windows)

  • Press CMD+K (Mac)

This opens the placeholder search modal, allowing you to search for any field or component by name.

Example:

Hi %lead_firstname%, your booking is confirmed for %event_datetime%.

3. SMS character limits

SMS content is limited compared to email:

  • Standard SMS uses GSM-7 encoding

  • Special characters may reduce the number of available characters

  • Long messages are split into segments by the carrier

Best practice:

  • Keep SMS short and direct

  • Avoid unnecessary special symbols

  • Use placeholders only for essential information

If a message is too long, it may be billed as multiple segments.

4. Testing SMS templates

To ensure your SMS works as expected:

  1. Create or edit the SMS template

  2. Use the placeholder search modal to insert correct values

  3. Preview the template using a real lead example

  4. Trigger the SMS through an automation or manual action in a test lead

  5. Verify the result in SMS logs

Always test templates when adding:

  • New placeholders

  • Conditional logic

  • Custom field references

This ensures that the SMS renders correctly and avoids failed sends.

Quick-send buttons (optional shortcut placement)

Each SMS template can be made available as a quick-send button, so users can send the SMS directly from key areas of Hubhus without opening automation or the template list.

You can choose between:

  • On profile page – adds a quick-send button on the lead’s profile

  • In calendar events – adds the button inside event details for fast communication

If you expect a template to appear as a button but don’t see it, check this setting. It only affects where the SMS can be sent from — not whether the SMS itself is allowed to send.

Summary

To edit SMS templates:

  • Access the SMS template editor in campaign settings

  • Insert dynamic placeholders using the search modal

  • Keep messages within practical character limits

  • Test templates using real lead data and review SMS logs

This ensures reliable and consistent SMS communication across your workflows.
